Hastelloy B

Hastelloy B

Hastelloy B is a solution-hardened nickel-molybdenum (Ni-Mo) alloy with exceptional resistance to corrosion by reducing acids, particularly excelling in full-strength hydrochloric acid below boiling point. Its low carbon and low silicon composition effectively minimizes susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The alloy also exhibits outstanding corrosion resistance to non-oxidizing acids such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, formic acid, and acetic acid. It is widely used in harsh environments including chemical processing, high-pressure reactors, distillation columns, acetic acid production, and pesticide synthesis.

Products Features

High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance

Exceptional Resistance to Reductive Acid Corrosion

The high molybdenum content (26-30%) endows Hastelloy B with nearly perfect corrosion resistance in reducing media such as hydrochloric acid, dilute sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid, far superior to conventional austenitic stainless steels and most nickel-based alloys.

High-Temperature Corrosion Resistance

Excellent hydrochloric acid corrosion resistance

Maintains stability in hydrochloric acid across all concentrations below boiling point, with no tendency for pitting or intergranular corrosion. It also resists non-oxidizing acids such as hydrogen chloride gas, formic acid, and acetic acid.

High Stability

Good intergranular corrosion resistance

Designed with low carbon (≤0.01%) and low silicon (≤0.08%), significantly reducing the risk of carbide and silicide precipitation in the weld heat-affected zone. It can be used in most corrosive environments in the as-welded condition without post-weld heat treatment.

Good Processability

Moderate sulfuric and phosphoric acid corrosion resistance

Performs well in sulfuric and phosphoric acids at moderate concentrations or lower, particularly suitable for non-oxidizing acidic solutions containing chlorides or fluorides.

High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance

Good formability and weldability

Can be formed hot or cold using conventional processes, with good weldability (GTAW, GMAW, SMAW). It is recommended to use matching Hastelloy B welding wire. Oxidizing atmospheres (such as nitric acid or oxygen-containing solutions) should be avoided, as they would significantly increase the corrosion rate.

High-temperature performance

Antioxidant Performance:

Hastelloy B is not recommended for use in oxidizing atmospheres (such as nitric acid, oxygen-containing solutions), as it will rapidly oxidize and fail in high-temperature oxidizing environments. Its intended application is in reducing acid media, with a recommended maximum continuous service temperature of≤ 450°C.

Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN):Not applicable (the PREN calculation formula is primarily used for chromium-containing stainless steels; Hastelloy B has extremely low chromium content and does not rely on pitting resistance equivalent for evaluation).Critical Pitting Temperature (CPT):There is no concept of pitting in reducing acids; however, uniform corrosion may occur in the presence of oxidizing impurities.Applicable Media:Hydrochloric acid (all concentrations, below boiling point)Dilute sulfuric acid (≤60%, especially when containing chloride ions)
