Q: What factors affect the magnetic performance of soft magnetic alloys?
A: The magnetic performance of soft magnetic alloys is influenced by several critical factors:
• Chemical Composition: Impurity elements (C, S, O, N) significantly degrade magnetic properties; high-purity raw materials are essential.
• Heat Treatment: Annealing temperature, holding time, and cooling rate directly determine permeability and coercivity. Hydrogen annealing or vacuum annealing at high temperatures (1100-1300°C) can achieve optimal magnetic performance.
• Processing Stress: Stamping, cutting, or other cold working operations introduce stress that reduces permeability. Final annealing is required to restore magnetic properties.
• Material Thickness: High-frequency applications require thinner materials (≤ 0.1 mm) to minimize eddy current losses.
• Operating Temperature: Magnetic performance degrades near the Curie point; exceeding this temperature causes permanent loss of ferromagnetism.
Q: Can you supply soft magnetic alloys in ultra-thin strip form for high-frequency applications?
A: Yes. We can supply soft magnetic alloys in ultra-thin strip form with thicknesses down to 0.05 mm (50 μm) and even 0.01 mm for specialized high-frequency applications. Thin strips are essential for reducing eddy current losses in high-frequency environments, such as aviation power supplies (400Hz), radar systems, switching power supplies, and high-frequency transformers. Please specify your frequency range and thickness requirements when requesting a quotation.
Q: What is the maximum operating temperature for soft magnetic alloys?
A: Maximum operating temperature varies by grade:
• Permendur 2V: Continuous operation ≤ 400°C, short-term exposure up to 500-600°C. Bs retention rate ≥ 87% at 400°C and ≥ 75% at 600°C.
• Permalloy (1J79): Continuous operation ≤ 100°C, short-term exposure up to 200°C. Permeability decreases significantly above 100°C.
• Electrical Silicon Steel: Continuous operation ≤ 150-200°C. Losses increase and magnetic properties degrade at higher temperatures.
Q: Do you provide magnetic performance test reports with each shipment?
A: Yes. Each shipment is accompanied by a material test report (MTC) that includes chemical composition, mechanical properties, and magnetic performance data such as permeability (μᵢ, μmax), coercivity (Hc), saturation flux density (Bs), and core loss measurements. Independent third-party testing (SGS, BV, etc.) is also available upon request.
Q: Can soft magnetic alloys be welded or machined after heat treatment?
A: Machining and welding are generally recommended before final heat treatment, as these processes introduce stress that degrades magnetic properties. If machining or welding is required after annealing, a final stress-relief annealing step is necessary to restore magnetic performance. Our technical team can provide specific process recommendations based on your component design.
