ASTM A335 P92

ASTM A335 P92

ASTM A335 P92 (ASME SA335 P92) is a martensitic heat-resistant steel, specifically a 9% chromium-0.5% molybdenum-1.8% tungsten-vanadium-niobium alloy steel. It falls under the 9% chromium-0.5% molybdenum-1.8% tungsten (W) reinforced alloy grade in the ASTM A335/ASME SA335 standard. Its typical composition ranges from 8.50-9.50% Cr, 0.30-0.60% Mo, 1.50-2.00% W, 0.15-0.25% V, and 0.04-0.09% Nb. It is one of the highest-grade materials in the chromium-molybdenum alloy steel series, renowned for its exceptional high-temperature strength and overall performance, and it serves as an upgraded version of P91. This material is specifically designed for ultra-high temperature, ultra-high pressure, and ultra-long service life conditions, making it one of the preferred materials for main steam pipelines in advanced ultra-supercritical power plants and nuclear power applications.
The core characteristics of ASTM A335 P92 lie in the perfect combination of ultra-high-temperature strength, excellent creep resistance, and superior high-temperature oxidation resistance. Building upon P91 (9%Cr-1%Mo-V-Nb), this grade achieves a tempered martensitic microstructure through partial tungsten (W) substitution for molybdenum (Mo), optimized vanadium (V) and niobium (Nb) microalloying, and strictly controlled heat treatment processes. This results in significantly higher high-temperature creep rupture strength in the 550-650°C temperature range compared to P91 (approximately 10-20% improvement). Under 620°C conditions, the allowable stress of P92 is about 1.1-1.2 times that of P91, enabling further reduction in pipe wall thickness, lowering pipe weight and thermal stress. It is therefore the standard material selection for advanced ultra-supercritical power plants and nuclear power projects in the 620°C class. The product complies with international standards such as ASTM A335/ASME SA335, ASTM A213 (corresponding to T92 tubes), and ASTM A387 (corresponding to Gr.92 plates).
Key Features: P92 is an upgraded grade in the A335 chromium-molybdenum steel series, offering the highest high-temperature strength. By replacing part of the molybdenum with tungsten, it achieves superior high-temperature creep strength compared to P91 (approximately +10-20%). It is the preferred material for main steam pipes in advanced ultra-supercritical power plants operating at the 620°C level, enabling engineering requirements for higher parameters and longer service life.

High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance

Ultra-high temperature strength and creep resistance (core advantages)

The core advantage of ASTM A335 P92 lies in its ultra-high high-temperature strength and creep resistance. Thanks to partial tungsten (W) substitution for molybdenum (Mo), optimized V-Nb microalloying, and a tempered martensitic microstructure, P92 exhibits significantly superior high-temperature creep rupture strength compared to P91 and traditional chromium-molybdenum steels within the 550-650°C temperature range. Under conditions at 620°C, the allowable stress of P92 is approximately 1.1-1.2 times that of P91, and its creep resistance is about 1.5-2 times that of P91. This enables it to effectively resist slow plastic deformation (creep) of materials under high temperature and pressure, ensuring the safety and reliability of pipelines during long-term high-temperature service. With a minimum tensile strength of 620 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 440 MPa-both far exceeding those of P91 (≥585 MPa / ≥415 MPa)-P92 allows for further wall thickness reduction, significantly lowering pipeline self-weight, thermal stress, and overall cost.

High-Temperature Corrosion Resistance

Excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance

The 9% chromium content in ASTM A335 P92 provides excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance. In high-temperature steam environments, P92 can form a dense and stable Cr₂O₃ oxide layer, effectively resisting high-temperature oxidation and steam oxidation. Its upper oxidation temperature limit reaches 620-650°C, which is significantly better than P22 (≤565°C) and P91 (≤593°C). This property makes it an ideal material for main steam pipes in advanced ultra-supercritical power plants operating at the 620°C grade.

High Stability

Good machinability and formability

ASTM A335 P92 exhibits good cold and hot working properties, allowing for various forming processes such as hot bending, cold bending, and forging. It should be noted that due to its martensitic structure and higher tungsten content, P92 has a slightly higher tendency for work hardening compared to P91. It is recommended to include appropriate intermediate annealing steps during forming operations. Its machinability is comparable to that of P91, and it can be processed using conventional machining methods. It is suggested to use carbide cutting tools.

Good Processability

Strict welding performance and post-weld heat treatment requirements

ASTM A335 P92 exhibits good weldability. However, due to its martensitic microstructure and high content of W and Cr, it has a strong tendency to harden in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) during welding, imposing extremely strict requirements on welding processes and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). It is recommended that preheating temperature before welding be 200-300°C. After welding, PWHT must be performed by heating to 730-780°C, holding at temperature, and then cooling slowly to eliminate residual welding stresses, soften the heat-affected zone, and ensure the toughness and crack resistance of the welded joint. The welding process requirements for P92 are more stringent than those for P91. It is advisable to have experienced welders operate, with strict control over heat input.

High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance

Excellent organizational stability and long-term service reliability

ASTM A335 P92 exhibits good organizational stability when in long-term service at temperatures ≤620℃. Its composition design of 9%Cr-0.5%Mo-1.8%W-V-Nb effectively enhances the material's high-temperature creep strength and oxidation resistance. The tempered martensite microstructure ensures the stability of the organization and the maintenance of mechanical properties during long-term high-temperature service. After normalizing and tempering (N+T) heat treatment, P92 obtains a uniform and fine tempered martensite microstructure, guaranteeing organizational stability and reliability under high-temperature service conditions.

Note: The strength level of P92 is significantly higher than that of P91 (≥585 MPa / ≥415 MPa). Its core advantages lie in the substitution of part of Mo with W and optimized V-Nb micro-alloying, which bring ultra-high high-temperature strength and creep resistance, enabling long-term safe operation of 620°C class ultra-supercritical units. For higher temperature grades (>650°C), nickel-based alloys are recommended.

Long-term Thermal Stability and Microstructural Stability

ASTM A335 P92 exhibits good microstructural stability during long-term service at temperatures ≤620°C. The partial substitution of Mo with W and optimized V-Nb microalloying effectively enhance high-temperature creep strength and oxidation resistance. However, microstructural stability decreases and creep strength significantly drops when used for long-term service above 650°C. Therefore, it is not recommended for long-term service above 650°C. For higher temperature grades, nickel-based alloys are suggested.

Heat treatment system

The final performance of ASTM A335 P92 is highly dependent on the heat treatment regime, with common specifications as follows:

1. Normalizing Treatment (Normalizing)
Heat to 1040-1065°C, hold for sufficient time (approximately 1 hour per inch of wall thickness), then air cool or fan cool. This results in a uniform, fine martensitic structure, preparing it for subsequent tempering.

2. Tempering treatment(Tempering)
Heat to 730-780°C, hold for sufficient time, then air cool. This eliminates stresses induced by normalizing, obtains tempered martensite microstructure, optimizes toughness and plasticity, and achieves the final service properties.

3. Full Annealing (Optional)
Heat to 850-900°C, hold at temperature, then furnace cool to approximately 650°C, followed by air cooling to room temperature. This is used to eliminate cold working stresses or improve cold working formability.

Attention:

The heat treatment temperature of P92 is comparable to that of P91 (normalizing 1040-1065°C) and must be strictly controlled

Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) must be performed after welding. It involves heating to 730-780°C, holding at temperature, and then slow cooling to eliminate residual welding stresses and soften the heat-affected zone.

The welding process requirements for P92 are stricter than those for P91. It is recommended to strictly control the welding heat input and preheating temperature (200-300°C).

The heat treatment temperature and time must be strictly controlled to avoid grain coarsening or performance fluctuations.
