Monel 502

Monel 502

Monel 502 is a nickel-copper-based precipitation-hardening alloy optimized from the K-500 alloy by adding aluminum and titanium to form γ' phase precipitation strengthening, offering superior machinability and high-temperature strength. This alloy maintains excellent mechanical properties in the temperature range of -200°C to 450°C, with a maximum operating temperature of 600°C. It also exhibits outstanding resistance to seawater, chloride stress corrosion cracking, and acid corrosion. It is widely used in pump shafts, fasteners, valve components, propeller shafts, and aerospace fasteners.

Technical Parameters

Products Features

High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance

Ultra-high strength from precipitation hardening

Through precipitation hardening heat treatment, Monel 502 achieves a tensile strength of up to 1158 MPa and a yield strength of 1034 MPa, while maintaining approximately 15% elongation, making it suitable for high-stress fasteners and structural components.

High-Temperature Corrosion Resistance

Good high-temperature creep resistance

Monel 502 has excellent creep resistance, maintaining dimensional stability under prolonged exposure to high temperatures and stress. It is suitable for high-temperature fasteners and pressure-bearing piping in power engineering. Its maximum continuous operating temperature is approximately 600°C, where it still retains good mechanical properties.

High Stability

Excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and acid resistance

It demonstrates outstanding corrosion resistance to seawater, salt spray, and marine biological fouling, with prominent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC). It also performs stably in non-oxidizing acids (such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid) and alkaline solutions, particularly suitable for conditions with sulfuric acid concentration <85% and temperature <80°C.

Good Processability

Good machinability and weldability

The alloy has better machinability than conventional nickel-copper alloys, with machining characteristics similar to 300-series austenitic stainless steels. It has excellent ductility, allowing for hot and cold working using conventional methods. It also has good weldability, suitable for various conventional welding processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and resistance welding.

Antioxidant Properties:

Monel 502 exhibits good oxidation resistance below 400°C, forming a stable oxide film on its surface, making it suitable for long-term service in medium to high-temperature environments. It can operate continuously in air at temperatures up to approximately 600°C, and its corrosion rate in high-temperature steam is less than 0.026 mm/a.

High-Temperature Strength Retention: In the precipitation-hardened condition, Monel 502 retains high strength below approximately 425°C (800°F), with tensile and yield strengths superior to most common nickel-based alloys.

Applicable Media:

1. Seawater, brine, and brackish water (excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking)

2. Non-oxidizing acids: Sulfuric acid (concentration <85%), hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid

3. Alkaline solutions: Sodium hydroxide, hot concentrated alkaline solutions

4. Organic acids: Formic acid, acetic acid

5. High-temperature steam, dry fluorine gas, chlorine gas, bromine, and organic compounds

6. Neutral solutions, water, and atmosphere

Note: Monel 502 is not resistant to strong oxidizing acids (such as nitric acid, hot concentrated sulfuric acid) and wet chlorine gas, where corrosion rates are higher. In ammonia environments, it can withstand anhydrous ammonia and corrosion under ammonia conditions below 585°C.
