MP35N®

MP35N®

MP35N® (UNS R30035) is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-molybdenum-based ultra-high-strength alloy that achieves exceptional tensile strength (≥ 1790 MPa) and excellent comprehensive mechanical properties through a dual mechanism of martensitic phase transformation induced by cold working and age precipitation strengthening. Its chemical composition (Co 35%, Ni 33%, Cr 20%, Mo 10%) is produced via a double-vacuum process of vacuum induction melting followed by vacuum arc remelting, ensuring high purity and uniform microstructure. MP35N® performs exceptionally well under medium-to-low temperature and high-stress conditions, while also exhibiting outstanding resistance to seawater, salt spray, H₂S, and corrosion from various acids and alkalis. It is widely used in harsh environments such as aerospace fasteners, medical devices (prosthetic joints, bone screws), marine engineering, oil and gas downhole tools, and the nuclear industry.

High-Temperature Oxidation Resistance

Ultra-high strength and excellent comprehensive mechanical properties

The core advantage of MP35N® lies in its unique cold deformation-induced martensitic phase transformation strengthening combined with aging precipitation strengthening mechanism. Cold drawing deformation first induces martensitic phase transformation in the face-centered cubic matrix, generating a large number of dislocations and grain boundaries to form deformation strengthening. Subsequent aging treatment precipitates dispersed Ni₃X phases (γ' phases), further enhancing strength. In the fully heat-treated state (cold drawing + aging), the tensile strength at room temperature can reach 1790 - 2070 MPa, yield strength 1600 - 1900 MPa, with elongation maintained at 8% - 15% and reduction of area at 40% - 60%. It retains good plasticity, toughness, and stress corrosion resistance at ultra-high strength levels, making it a first-tier material among currently commercialized high-strength alloys.

High-Temperature Corrosion Resistance

Excellent Corrosion Resistance

MP35N® exhibits corrosion resistance comparable to that of MP159®. It demonstrates excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in chloride environments, making it suitable for use in seawater, salt spray, H₂S, and a variety of acidic and alkaline conditions. The high molybdenum content (10%) significantly enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while the nickel content (33%) ensures good corrosion resistance in reducing acids. In typical tests, no crevice corrosion or pitting was observed, and no damage occurred in salt spray exposure tests. Alternating immersion tests confirmed the alloy's good resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking. It is applicable to harsh environments such as marine engineering, acidic oil and gas fields, and chemical processing.

High Stability

Non-magnetic & Biocompatible

MP35N® retains its paramagnetic face-centered cubic structure with extremely low relative permeability (< 1.001) even under extreme cold working and low-temperature conditions, making it an ideal material for aerospace and medical implant applications. Additionally, this alloy exhibits excellent biocompatibility, with superior corrosion resistance in the human body's fluid environment. It does not release harmful ions and is widely used in orthopedic implants (prosthetic joints, screws, plates) and dental instruments.

Good Processability

Excellent cold working formability and special heat treatment process

MP35N® exhibits good ductility in the solution-treated state, with an elongation of over 60%, making it suitable for producing precision parts through processes such as cold heading, cold rolling, and cold extrusion. Ultra-high strength can be achieved after cold working through aging treatment. The strengthening path of this alloy follows a special process route of 'solution treatment + cold drawing + aging', which is different from traditional alloys that can be strengthened by heat treatment alone. Important note: All machining operations (turning, milling, drilling, tapping, etc.) must be completed in the solution-treated state, followed by aging treatment to achieve the final properties.

High-temperature performance

High-Temperature Strength Retention:

MP35N® maintains extremely high strength levels below 400°C. Its tensile strength remains above 1400 MPa at 300°C and is not less than 1200 MPa at 400°C.

Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PREN):

PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo = 20 + 33 ≈ 53, which is much higher than that of 316L (approximately 25) and 904L (approximately 35), offering excellent resistance to localized corrosion in chloride-containing environments.

Antioxidant Properties:

MP35N® exhibits good antioxidant properties below 600°C and demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance in aviation fuel, hydraulic oil, and atmospheric environments.

Organizational Stability:

MP35N® maintains organizational stability and prevents performance degradation over a wide temperature range (up to approximately 400°C). The aging temperature must be strictly controlled between 600-650°C; exceeding 700°C will result in over-aging, leading to a decrease in strength.

Applicable Media:

1. Seawater, salt spray

2. Chloride solutions, brine

3. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) environment

4. Sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, formic acid, acetic acid

5. Marine atmospheric environment

6. Aviation fuel, hydraulic oil

Note: MP35N® is sensitive to hydrogen embrittlement in acidic environments and requires dehydrogenation treatment (190-220°C, holding time ≥ 23 hours) prior to electroplating.
